Adult euphausiids (krill) are probably the most important prey item for humpback and fin whales in the Kitimat Fjord System, but their avoidance makes them extremely difficult to sample thoroughly from small, low-cost platforms like the SV Bangarang.
However! They must have a weakness, and we will find it! This brief Backgrounder reviews the way avoidance works and why it is so detrimental to analyses, then evaluates the efficacy of two possible measures for mitigating avoidance: sampling at night, or sampling with lights. Both would come at considerable expense and risk for the Bangarang – but desperate tows call for desperate measures!
This and other Backgrounders are housed on the Reports page.
