This Backgrounder is all about my favorite topic in marine mammalogy. It’s what the Bangarang fin whales are doing between breaths all summer long.
The lunge feed is among the most innovative and outlandish behaviors exhibited by the ocean’s great predators. But its glory comes at great energetic cost. This fact informs almost everything about the largest whales: their dive behavior, their size, their range, their reproductive strategy, and most other dimensions of their natural history.
This and other Backgrounders can be found on the Reports page. Thanks again to KMQ for her extremely helpful editing.
