From Feb. 19 to 22, the Gitga’at Research Symposium brought together scientists from all over the world who are partnering with the Gitga’at First Nation to study various aspects of their territory. I was fortunate enough to be included in this landmark event.
The researchers introduced themselves to the broader community, shared in incredible feasts of locally harvested foods, brainstormed alongside the Gitga’at on future research directions, and were treated to a rare wintertime tour of their marine territory.
The community welcomed us with trademark hospitality, impressed us with intimate knowledge of their lands and waters, and convinced us, a bunch of stuffy scientists, to lighten up and enjoy ourselves. It was an unexpected, beautiful and inspiring weekend.
Here’s to the People of the Cane.
